The
Department of Mathematics will be hosting a
summer NREUP (National Research Experience for Undergraduates Program)
during June 1-July 19, 2008,
sponsored by the
Mathematical Association of America with funds provided by
the National Science Foundation,
the National Security Agency,
and the
Moody's Foundation.
Each participant will be supported
with a stipend ($3,200 including benefits), an allowance for meal expenses, and campus housing if needed.
Our program is aimed at involving 4 or more undergraduate minority students
in active research under supervision of mathematicians
who are dedicated researchers and mentors. The 2008 research topic will be solitons (solitary waves)
and applications.
The objectives
are to provide the participants with meaningful research
experience, to show them the enjoyment of doing research,
to encourage them to pursue advanced degrees
in mathematical sciences, and to increase research participation
by minority groups. At the end of the program
the participants will prepare a written report and give a presentation of their
research. The program will be enhanced with some
scientific, cultural, and social activities.
In addition to participating in quality research, the student researchers will be developing basic
research and computational skills, learn about opportunities at
the graduate level, and gain skills to present and disseminate research findings.
Except for the research topic,
the structure of our 2008 NREUP program will be similar to those of our
2006 NREUP program
and
2007 NREUP program.
We have filled all our openings and have no more openings for our 2008 summer program. In case you may be interested in participating in a similar program we may run in the summer of 2009 (contingent upon funding), we will be recruiting applicants in Fall 2008 and early 2009.
Requirements: US citizenship or US permanent residency, minority status (Hispanic, African American, Native American), undergraduate status at least till December 2009, being a good student, background in calculus,
some exposure to ordinary differential equations and linear algebra is desirable but not necessary.
Interested applicants should contact Dr. Tuncay Aktosun
(e-mail:
aktosun@uta.edu)
as soon as possible.
